I’ve been thinking about the legacy of people’s lives at the moment, poignantly as two people I know are navigating difficult end of life scenarios. When David Hockney died this month, many reflected on how he lived as much as what he created. One tribute described him as “always completely and courageously himself, with a unique vision of the world” I thought how wonderful those words were, and how happy I would be if those words were used of me.
I wonder, as Christian people, whether we are always evidently “completely and courageously” ourselves, bearing witness to Christ, and our unique vision of the world, living our best life?
It’s not always about remembering the good times, but maybe it’s as much about how we conduct ourselves and reveal our true nature in the difficult seasons of life.
It made me wonder…
What will people remember about us?
We often think legacy is about achievements, but Scripture reminds us that God values faithfulness, humility, and obedience over greatness. It is the effect of our normal daily lives, actions and everyday character that people will remember. Our greatest influence may actually be in ordinary acts of love, service, and kindness.
Hockney was remembered not only “for who he was and what he stood for” but for helping people notice beauty.
As Christians, we are called to point people toward the beauty and goodness of Christ. Our words, hospitality, generosity, and compassion can help others glimpse God’s presence in everyday life, and we each have our own unique way of doing that.
I wonder what yours is?
The tributes to David Hockney spoke of someone who was “courageously himself.”
Christian authenticity is not about self-expression alone but about becoming the person God created us to be, whatever that looks like. Living with integrity means our private character and public witness tell the same story.
Careers, possessions, and accomplishments fade but the love we show, the people we disciple, the prayers we pray, and the faith we pass on to those we encounter in our lives have eternal significance. A life surrendered to Christ can leave echoes for generations to come, acting as a long lasting inheritance to those we leave behind.
One day our names may be spoken in remembrance by family, friends, or perhaps only a few people. The question is not how famous we become, how powerful we have been, nor how much wealth we have, but whether our lives have reflected Christ.
May our lives each faithfully paint our own unique picture so that we may be remembered as people who noticed God’s grace, shared His love generously, and faithfully pointed others toward the One whose legacy is eternal.
This is how we can each live our best life…
God at the centre, the author of time and space; the Creator of all things.
Through darkness & light, each season holds the mark of the Creator’s hand, and as we journey each year through spring, summer, autumn & winter, we are to draw strength from the central well of Living Water to be nurtured & grow in faith. As we walk with Christ through each spiralled season of our lives, we are to pass on the light of God wherever we go, – sharing with others the seeds of Love & all we have been gifted…
